Node.js is shipping new releases, preparing important security updates, and getting closer to a major change in how releases move toward LTS.
This week:
- 🟢 Node.js 26.12.0 and 24.22.0 bring new WebSocket utilities, crypto APIs, SQLite improvements, performance updates, and more.
- 🔐 New Node.js security releases are coming October 21 for the 26.x, 24.x, and 22.x release lines.
- 🔄 The Node.js release schedule is changing, with Node.js 27 introducing the new model and an Alpha phase for earlier testing.
- 🎙️ Matteo Collina joins NodeSource to talk about AI agents, production debugging, runtime context, and modern Node.js workflows.
- 🤖 AI developer tooling keeps evolving, with updates across GitHub Copilot, Agentic Autofix, and new AI APIs.
- 🌎 Plus, what’s coming up at JSConf México 2026 and the Node.js community.
From release changes and security updates to AI-assisted development, here’s what Node.js teams should have on their radar this week.
Let’s dive in. 🚀
🟢 Last Week in Node.js
Node.js 26.12.0 (Current)
Node.js 26.12.0 landed on October 14 with new HTTP WebSocket utilities, including websocketMask() and websocketUnmask(), along with build support for Python 3.15 and several runtime, crypto, and dependency updates.
Node.js 24.22.0 (LTS)
The latest Node.js 24 LTS update brings a larger set of additions, including crypto.parsePKCS12(), a new generic MAC API, new SIV and GCM-SIV cipher modes, improvements to perf_hooks histograms, new SQLite statement cleanup APIs, and the new util.throttle() and util.debounce() utilities.
Security Releases Coming October 21
The Node.js project announced security releases for the 26.x, 24.x, and 22.x release lines, scheduled for October 21. The highest-severity vulnerability being addressed is rated HIGH.
The project also reminds users that EOL versions should be considered affected when security releases occur.

The Node.js Release Schedule Is Changing
After more than a decade of shipping a new major every six months, Node.js is moving to a new release model.
Starting with Node.js 27, the project will move toward one major release per year, every major will eventually become LTS, and a new Alpha phase will give maintainers and early adopters time to test upcoming changes before they reach Current.
Node.js 26 will be the final release under the old model, while the first Node.js 27 Alpha is planned for October 28.
For developers, maintainers, and platform teams, this means a simpler release lifecycle, fewer simultaneous release lines, and a clearer path for testing what comes next.
🎙️ AI Agents, Node.js & Production Debugging with Matteo Collina
We sat down with Matteo Collina to talk about AI agents, debugging Node.js applications in production, runtime context, and some of the challenges developers face when upgrading and maintaining modern Node.js systems.
🌎 Community & Events
Node.js Community: Preparing for the New Release Model
The Node.js project continues preparing for its new release model. Last week, new documentation for the updated release schedule landed in the Node.js repository. Starting with Node.js 27, the project is moving away from the traditional odd/even release model toward one major release per year, with every major eventually becoming LTS.
The change is designed to make maintaining and securing Node.js more sustainable for its contributor community, while giving users a simpler and more predictable upgrade path.

JSConf México Is Coming 🇲🇽
JSConf México returns to Guadalajara on October 29–30, bringing together the JavaScript community for talks and workshops across Node.js, AI, performance, architecture, and open source.
The event will also include a Node.js Code + Learn session, giving developers an opportunity to learn how to contribute directly to the Node.js project.

Gemini 4 Argon Lands in GitHub Copilot
Google’s Gemini 4 Argon is now generally available in GitHub Copilot. The model is designed for complex coding, agentic workflows, and reasoning tasks, and can be selected across VS Code, Copilot CLI, the coding agent, JetBrains IDEs, Xcode, and more.
GitHub’s Agentic Autofix Is Now Generally Available
GitHub has made Agentic Autofix generally available for code scanning alerts. Copilot can explore the relevant code, propose a fix, rerun CodeQL to validate it, iterate when needed, and then open a draft pull request for review.
